While it is expected to make its closest approach in February 1, I have opted to observe and image it early since the Moon's phase (gibbous) will affect visibility as it passes close to us.

A non-linear meteor trail was caught next to the comet during my first imaging session

AstroNormhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17497632392162606438noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8682204942147746249.post-22222005295594610002020-01-29T22:47:00.000-08:002020-02-23T19:44:40.177-08:00National Astronomy Week 2020
Cliff acquired a Celestron AVX mount from one of the MSA members earlier this year but never got to really put it to the test. So the objective of the night was to get the mount to run smoothly. I brought along my Omni XLT 150 to use. We started out early in the site which was a building undergoing construction. The third floor had an amazing clear view with minor obstructions from the distant mountain side. We usually setup in a darker location in mount Sto. Tomas but this site proved to be ideal as well. The light from Baguio City's central business district was shielded from our view and the transparency helped eliminate the sky glow from the nearby houses.

The mountainside to the North was just low enough that we were actually able to see Polaris and do a proper polar alignment (this was the best alignment we've had since Cliff started doing astrophotography). Prior to this Cliff had to make 18 minute adjustments to the AVX to get it to track correctly (could have been due to adjustments made when rough aligned). After the two-star align process we had to input some calibration stars before getting it to track smoothly.

I was also able to get good alignment for my CG4 but unfortunately failed to check on my collimation. I ended up troubleshooting my collimation for the first part of the session.

With both of our scopes properly aligned the test run ended up being a full-fledged imaging session. We got to image the following targets: double cluster, Triangulum Galaxy, Andromeda galaxy, Running man nebula, Flame nebula, de Mairan's nebula, Orion nebula, Horsehead nebula, Pleiades, Rosette nebula, and Collinder 38. We packed up a few minutes after the Moon came up.
The year 2019 brings us 5 eclipses which is something people are excited about. However, not all of these are visible in the Philippines. Geographical differences affect our view in the sense that at the moment an eclipse takes place in one side of the globe, the other side of the globe does not see it. Of the 5 eclipses, only two are visible from the Philippines (with one needing a geographical advantage in the South).

Jan 6 Partial Solar Eclipse (Not visible in the Philippines)

Jan 20 Total Lunar Eclipse (Not visible in the Philippines)

July 2 Solar Eclipse (Not visible in the Philippines)

July 17 Lunar Eclipse (Eclipse at Moonset, part of eclipse not visible)

Dec 26 Annular Solar Eclipse (Partial for most of the Philippines, annular from the Southernmost tip of Mindanao)

Eclipses happen when an object of roughly the same apparent size covers the other object. In the case of a solar eclipse the configuration is Sun-Moon-Earth, and for lunar it is Sun-Earth-Moon.

The duration and area covered by an eclipse is dependent on how big the shadow is cast by the eclipsing object. For a lunar eclipse the Earth's shadow is cast on the Moon and since the Earth is much bigger it casts a larger shadow. Any area where the umbral shadow is cast when the Moon passes will see a total lunar eclipse. Now note that the Moon's orbit is tilted with respect to the Sun-Earth plane, therefore the angle in which the Moon passes behind the Earth varies. A lunar eclipse lasts longer when the Moon passes as close to the center of the shadow as possible.

The July 17 Lunar eclipse is partly visible from our reference. From our geographical location on the globe (that's right flat-earther's) the Earth will be rotating us away from the eclipse during the 'Blood Moon' phase. Meaning the Philippines will move or rather rotate to the Sun facing side of the Earth as the rest of the eclipse takes place in view from other geographical locations. From our view it can be seen as an eclipse during Moonset.

Now since the Moon is smaller it casts a smaller shadow making the eclipsed area smaller. As a result the geographic location experiencing a solar eclipse is very limited. As you can see in the picture on the right (Image by NASA DSCOVR EPiC Team) the shadow of the Moon only covers a certain region. Since the shadow is relatively small a solar eclipse will only last for a short time.

In the case of the December 2019 Annular Solar Eclipse the image below (Fred Espenak|NASA GSFC) shows the eclipse path and regions of the globe they are visible in. The red band is where the center of the Moon's shadow passes where the eclipse will be seen as an "annulus" or ring. Note that when an annular eclipse happens it means that the Moon is further from the Earth on its orbit, which in turn results to an even smaller shadow. For observers in the Philippines the amount in which the Sun is eclipsed will vary depending on how close you are to the shadow. Observers in Luzon will see less of an eclipse as compared to observers in Mindanao.

holiday for my family involves a lot of traveling. Depending on our
mode of transportation I would usually just take my camera along and
take some unguided long exposures of the night sky whenever possible.
However, since this holiday we had a large enough space for
transportation I decided to take my EQ4 mount along with my Celestron
C90 for a series of free telescope viewings (FTVs).

Our first destination was
my hometown and summer capital of the Philippines – Baguio City.
Manila had been cloudy due to the t

ropical storm passing through the
Visayas, but clear skies dominated most of the nights here. The high
altitude and good transparency of Baguio always made it a pleasure to
observe during good weather. I setup my telescope in front of the
Quezon Hill Community Church. Carollers and passersby got to view the
Moon up-close as well as take photos through their phones. A group of
kids stopped by after every round of carols they made. Initially I
wanted to get in touch with UP Baguio Astronomical Society to join
forces for an FTV here but time constraints and consideration for the
students being with their families made me decide to setup on my own.
My next FTV destination
was at Agoo, La Union. This is where my grandparents' house was
located, and where my grandmother built a dedicated astrodeck for my
use. From late in the afternoon until the evening I would take out my
telescope to the basketball court of the local barangay (native
Filipino term for a village; district or ward) to view the waxing
gibbous Moon. The court was filled with people playing basketball and
kids and adults watching. The kids were first to gather around the
telescope, and little by little players would slip from their game to
take a peek until eventually everyone came to see.

The following day we
traveled to San Juan, La Union to stay overnight in a resort. Several
resorts lined the beach as it was a frequented surfing spot. I took
my telescope out on the beach for an FTV. Visitors of the resorts who
saw the setup came to take a look and have discussions about
astronomy. The resort owner, who happens to have an interest in
astronomy and how the ancient Polynesians used the stars to navigate
the sky also joined me and welcomed the idea of doing an Astronomy
Night event for the resort.

After New Year we headed
back to Baguio. I didn't get to do anymore FTVs after catching a cold
– probably from spending a number of chilly nights in the
astrodeck, and hot weather during the day. Being from Baguio, we
tried to visit spots that we haven't been to or are not crowded by
tourists. One of the places we went to is the Maryknoll Ecological
Sanctuary. Why am I adding this to this log? Because of the
cosmology/history of Earth inspired nature walk. The hiking trail was
entitled Cosmic Journey where they trace the formation of the
Universe to the evolution of man.

My mentee, Sobina Yu, approached me once to talk about setting up an astronomy organization in her school. Part of the projects she had in line for the Judenite's Astronomical Organization was an out of town stargazing trip. On October 7 an agreement was made between the Manila Street Astronomers and JAO to facilitate a stargazing trip at Big Handy's Grounds.

Sobina organized and facilitated mostly everything: from talking to teachers and school administrators, securing permits, parents consents, transportation, budgeting and accounting, and coordination with Big Handy's Grounds. This was her first time handling an activity of this sort so she was very much out of her comfort zone. Even when she got all stressed out - messaging me late at night, contacting various people, explaining to parents, etc. - she handled everything pretty well, and I am very proud of her for doing so. Assisting her from JAO to deal with school documents was her VP, Janina Uygongco. I on the other hand organized the manpower who will serve as facilitators, and telescope providers. I had a bit of problems at first with the changing line up of facilitators since most of the MSA core group had sudden unforeseen work concerns (which can't be avoided, I've had my share). Fortunately I had some reliable individuals to catch the ball - Rheanne Odessa Jimeno and Kenneth Bailador. As hiking was a necessary part of the trip the three of us used portable telescope setups. I brought my Celestron TravelScope 70 and my Celestron C90, while Rheanne and Kenneth brought a PowerSeeker 80 EQ. Also with us were Kashogi Astapan and Khristian Dimacali.

The group left Mendiola at around 1:00 PM on November 15. It was my first trip to BHG. It was cloudy when we got there but fast moving wind currents kept the clouds moving through the night. Unfortunately we missed out on several of the southern targets. Even Saturn was hard to resolve with the poor seeing. In the west we could see the sky glow from Manila, and in the east another bright light source was present. Fortunately It was gone some time past midnight. Friends who have been to BHG said it wasn't there before. For a moment when there was full cloud cover the sky was bright as clouds glowed white from the light sources.

We were able to observe several deep-sky objects including star clusters, nebulae, double stars, and the Andromeda galaxy. In the morning we watched the waning crescent Moon while waiting for the sunrise.

Let's face it – at the
moment we don't have many opportunities for professional astronomy in
the Philippines. The truth is, our government simply does not have
that much of a priority for the sciences. We've all heard about
scientists moving to other countries for better opportunities, and
inventors selling their patents abroad because no one is willing to
support them. When I entered this field I have worked in the academe,
educational service companies, and non-profit groups. I have also
seen the kind of jobs my students have been able to find. Sadly,
there are a lot of students with potential out there who had to
extinguish the flames of their passion for more lucrative
careers.

Among the students I've talked to, the field of
medicine seems to be one of the most common choices. Not wanting to
put their potential and passion for astronomy to waste I usually
point out a direction that they can put into consideration – space
medicine. Space medicine involves proactive and reactive care of
humans to optimize their performance and well-being under the extreme
environment of space.

In the environment of
space the human body is subjected to various effects like bone and
muscle loss, reduced cardiovascular function, radiation exposure,
microgravity, and even effects on mental health. These factors can
result to symptoms such as: loss of appetite, fatigue, insomnia,
dehydration, skin inflammation, back pain, respiratory infection, eye
irritation, UTI, abnormal heart beats, muscle strain, diarrhea,
constipation, ear problems, and lung inflammation. These symptoms
have to be diagnosed correctly for the effects and treatment may be
different on the ground and in space.

Be it on the ground, or
out in space, there are many ways in which space medicine is needed.
Among the tasks involved are the production of documentation for
medical requirements; medical selection and certification of
astronauts; biomedical training on medical protocols; flight health
evaluation and monitoring; provide preventive, diagnostic, and
therapeutic care; environmental health and monitoring; crew
rehabilitation and fitness evaluation; and emergency medical
services.

With humanity's plans to
go to Mars in the relatively near future, there will eventually be a
need for medical students entering space medicine to serve as future
doctors in space crews. Who knows, maybe one of the students I've
talked to will get to be one of them.
As astronomy in
the Philippines is slowly gaining popularity, the bulk of activities
still revolves around outreach and telescope viewing activities. I
was in college when I first organized these kind of events, and I've
been doing this ever since. From an organizers perspective, it isn't
uncommon to hear questions like:

“I only knew about this
now”

“Ba't ngayon lang
nagkaganito?”

“Can I know when your
next event is?”

“Open po ba sa public?”

We've all had to deal
with them one way or another and we can only do so much to market
these events. Because of this some members of the astronomy community
have tried to establish a single access portal to learn about these
kind of activities.

Philippine Astronomy

Philippine astronomy was
the first web portal of all astronomy related activities and events
for the Philippines. It was maintained by Raymund Ang who was a
member of the Astronomical League of the Philippines at that time.
Unfortunately, Raymund didn't get much support for the project as not
much content was shared from the community. He was also based in
Bacolod so most content was gathered from social media.

Philippine Astronomy

Philippine Astronomy
Forum was originally a yahoo forum group that eventually turned into
a Facebook group. It was initiated by James Kevin Ty of the
Astronomical League of the Philippines. The forum talks about
anything astronomy, and there are lots of content on
astrophotography.

Dark Sky Network

Dark Sky Network was a
Facebook group designed to share astronomy events to the community
for collaborative participation. This was an open-access initiative
by Anthony Urbano that allowed members who were available to take
part in these setups. The group was eventually removed in Facebook
years later when the objectives were not met and the content was
filled with members' astro photos rather than events.

Many of us astro-bloggers
promote events from different groups. On my part, my postings and
listings of Philippine astronomy content was eventually shifted to a

Filipino Astronomy

Astronomy PH is a
quarterly e-zine that promotes science communication and
collaboration between members of the local astronomy community. This
is a project of the GAIA-Open Research and Collaborative Learning
Experience. The content is crowd-sourced from the different groups,
and news and announcement of past and future events can be found in
the finder section. It's most recent initiative is it's twitteraccount where the community can tweet their news/events.

While some of these have
been discontinued either due to lack of time or support from the
community, content not matching objective, or the over-loading of
astro-photos, they are worth mentioning to provide us with insight as
to future efforts. Currently there is a discussion between different
astronomy groups being initiated by Kashogi Astapan of creating a new
web portal for Philippine Astronomy content. I have high hopes for
this initiative and wish that past examples can guide this project
into a truly collaborative direction where everyone can benefit.

There is a question that I have
been avoiding recently. Every so often, I find myself being asked “So what are
you doing now?” (or any variation thereof like: ‘where are you working?’; ‘are
you still teaching?’; ‘what astronomy projects are you doing?’). I’ve been
avoiding this question not because of its difficulty nor because I find it
embarrassing. I have been avoiding this question because I cannot simply put it
in a few words. The thing is, I’m doing all sorts of stuff right now that I
usually pause and think which to mention, or in which context I am asked before
giving a response.

My Past Work

I studied physics and astronomy
in college and graduate school because I used to dream of becoming a research
astronomer. Heck, I still do. My first job was as a college instructor at the
Department of Earth and Space Sciences of Rizal Technological University.
Simultaneously, I also held a contractual position in the department as their
Scientific Coordinator and Laboratory/Multimedia Assistant. I also spearheaded
the formation of the department’s solar research program. I was also very
active in the Astronomical League of the Philippines – being a constant
lecturer and present in multiple events. I also worked in the Andromeda Mobile
Planetarium which went around the Cordilleras for weeks at a time – limiting my
time to take up a teaching load for my college classes. These were the few
tasks in which (to borrow the university president’s words) I started to
‘create a name’ for myself in the local astronomy community.

Fast Forward Now

As my work with Andromeda was
almost over I had a lot of time in my hands that I decided to focus on a number
of my close astronomy students to create an environment for them to continue
their training and exposure to different astronomy and astro-related tasks. Professional
astronomy work is relatively new in the Philippines so there are limited
options for growth. This environment for my students became the Guild for
Astronomy Innovation and Advancement which focused areas of their development
such as: publication, observation, outreach, instrumentation, and research. GAIA
also extends its reach to the public by providing citizen science and
collaborative opportunities through its Open Research and Collaborative
Learning Experience program (ORACLE). I also devoted my time to the Manila
Street Astronomers, as one of its co-founders, and created a linkage for GAIA
in MSA for their Observation. The MSA is a non-profit collaborative sidewalk
astronomy group who goes around different areas to provide free telescope
viewing events. Alongside GAIA and MSA, I am currently the adviser for the
Philippine Union of Student Organizations for Astronomy (PUSO for Astronomy; puso is the Filipino word for heart),
and just recently the National Coordinator for the Philippines of the
Astronomers Without Borders.

These collaborative astronomy
work is where I spend most of my free time on. All of these are non-profit –
and hence enters the paying job. Outside the astronomy scene I am working in
Specializing in Modern Interactive Learning Experience (SMILE Group PH). Smile
is a STEM/STEAM education company who provides the STEM methodology of teaching
through their different programs and classes. They also hold the franchise for international
STEM programs such as Engineering for Kids and Challenge Island. My work in
Smile involves teaching and curriculum development – especially in robotics
where I am currently the lead faculty of. Of course, my love for astronomy and
physics won’t drift away as STEM provides for learning across disciplines. We
have different astronomy and physics related concepts from space-based robotics
to aerospace engineering. I allocate roughly 80-95% of my earning working as a
STEM educator to provide for my astronomy work. And because my paid-job is
full-time, I squeeze my astronomy work in during coffee breaks, weekends, rest
days, and during the night.

Don’t get me wrong, I also take
my STEM work seriously. I know I can opt to further my career path by focusing
on my professional development like achieving that elusive Ph.D., but the work
I’m doing is of equal importance. I believe that in order to develop the local
astronomy community we need to provide opportunities and develop our learning
culture. We need to inspire learning and thinking beyond traditional means to
create solutions and innovations. I believe we need a culture that provides
opportunities for everyone regardless of age, status, background, etc. When we
develop the learning culture we empower the community. We create learners who
create solutions and seek to develop themselves. It may be idealistic to some, and
some people in my field may look down on me, but every journey begins with a
simple step.

So… to answer the questions vaguely, “I am
currently working to make tomorrow better than yesterday. Would you like to
join me?”AstroNormhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17497632392162606438noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8682204942147746249.post-2459083240663494502016-12-26T07:12:00.002-08:002016-12-26T07:59:23.105-08:00Twas the Dawn Before Christmas

Our family was traveling North for this Christmas to visit our relatives
and our first stop was in Agoo, La Union - our grandparents' place. The
house there was renovated a few years back and my grandmother put into
consideration that I was an astronomer and added an astrodeck for my
use. As we arrived at around 2 AM I looked up right away, as most
astronomy inclined person does, and I saw that the sky was just perfect.

(Nock-Ten) was underway and I had to take advantage of the sky
condition. I immediately rushed up and set my camera to image the sky
while the rest of the family went to bed.

I have always enjoyed the night sky from this area. The night sky is dark in this area with a low population density and the West Philippine Sea bordering on the West. The municipality I was in only accounts for 8% of the population in the province. Unfortunately, some unshielded lights have been recently installed in the North-Eastern side (hence my source of illumination in the picture above). Nevertheless, they are still within manageable observing conditions.
It's summer once again and while some kids are going places during their vacation, some are joining summer camps. This summer I was tasked to create a robotics camp for SMILE (Specializing in Modern Interactive Learning Experiences) Group. The Space Race camp, which is a cross between robotics and space sciences, runs for 8 sessions. Here they get to use Lego Mindstorm's EV3 and design and program it as a space rover. They get to understand how robots are used in space exploration as well as understand the features of different space landscapes and phenomena.

In reality robots dominate the space exploration scene. One fundamental reason for this is that space is a harsh environment. It actually costs more for human space exploration than for robotic missions. Humans require life support systems - supply of air, water and food; radiation shielding; temperature control, etc. Also, humans are subject to physical and psychological problems during long periods of space flight and isolation.

Robots in space exist in many forms such as landers, rovers, orbiters, and utility bots. They are designed for specific environments and for specific functions. Here are some of them:

Here is my coverage of the March 9 Partial Solar Eclipse as seen from Project 6, Quezon City, Philippines. I setup my Sky-Watcher Explorer 150PL with my Baader solar filter for imaging and my Celestron Travelscope 70 with black polymer filter for visual observation. The initial forecast in the morning suggested partly cloudy skies but was fortunate to get good conditions except for the end of the eclipse.

The umbral shadow will pass through the waters of Indonesia giving us only a partial view. Originally the plan was for me and my friends from the International School for Young Astronomers to meet back at Indonesia for the eclipse but we weren't able to do so. Instead I took a leave today from work to cover the eclipse. As the eclipse progressed I tried to share the observations to the general public via Facebook.

The rest of the astronomical community are dispersed in different areas to cover the eclipse. The whole day workshop was held at the Polytechnic University of the Philippines Laboratory High School (PUP LHS). The participants were exposed to four areas:

Solar observation and eclipse details

Telescope basics

Solar Astronomy lecture

Astronomy virtual tour

Meet Aedan Pio, an intelligent 4-year old boy with a passion for space. He dreams of being an astronaut, and is a promising astro artist who does watercolor paintings of the planets. Sadly, Pio has a condition called chordoma (a rare kind of brain cancer).

To assist Pio, the Lung Center of the Philippines in coordination with Oxygen Art + Design Gallery will be hosting a fund raising art exhibit entitled Dots in Space. The exhibit will run from Sept 4 - Oct 6, 2015 at the lobby of the Lung Center (Quezon Avenue, Quezon City). Pio has several watercolor paintings of the solar system being sold as well as some paintings by his grandmother. I also contributed four paintings in the exhibit. Other astro artists and imagers are encouraged to add to the ongoing exhibit to help Pio.

As I looked at Pio's paintings I was amazed how he has certain details about the planets such as their colors and features. One particular painting I saw has all the terrestrial planets on one side and the gas giants on the other with Pluto located away from the line-up in accordance with its current dwarf planet status. During the short chat I had with Pio he asked me why Jupiter is so big. I was also surprised to Pio's response when his mom told him to ask me what is Jupiter made off. He responded by saying that Jupiter is made of mostly Hydrogen and Helium.
